Computer and Technology Classes

Employers: Cabrillo Extension can create an account for your company that allows your employees to request your approval to register for our classes. With the company account we can then invoice you when your employees register for a Cabrillo Extension class. Your company account will allow you to approve any registration requests made by your employees, and review or print their transactions.

Personal Information Security Basics

Given recent data breaches of companies that we all use we are becoming increasingly aware of how important it is to secure our personal information. But most of us aren’t sure how exactly to do that!

This class is designed to help you understand the concepts of cyber security that every person needs, as well as implement basic security functions on everyday equipment.

We will cover the steps you can take on your home devices (computers, tablets,etc.) phones, and networks, as well as in the workplace. We will provide best practices and online tools that are publicly available online.

We will discuss:

  • Cyber security and cyber hygiene, including safe internet use, and desktop computer security for Windows and Mac users.
  • Mobile Safety for Android and iOS security
  • How to identify and prevent social engineering
  • How to ensure the physical safety of your information and prevent dumpster diving and shoulder surfing
  • How to implement basic network/wireless safety
  • How to protect yourself from malware such as viruses, Trojan horses, and other threats

You will leave this class knowing how you can protect you and your family’s personal information, and even your information at work. This may be the class that everyone needs!

This class is taught in a PC lab, and students are encouraged to bring handheld devices and laptops to class in order to implement the skills and tools we cover.

Basic computer skills are necessary for success. Please complete the online pre-registration skills assessment before registering for this class.  If you do not have basic computer skills, please take the Essential Computer Skills class on February 9th, prior to taking this class.

Intro to Adobe Illustrator

Learn to create detailed, professional illustrations and drawings digitally, whether you draw by hand or want to create an illustration from your photos. Adobe Illustrator is a large application and this is your chance to get acquainted with some of the basic tools and techniques most useful for graphic artists & photographers. Find out how to vectorize your pencil or ink drawings, convert a photo into editable vectors, create gradients, use layers, create repeating patterns, designer text tricks on a path and more. Much of what will be learned will be useful for Photoshop and InDesign as well.

Intro to Surface Textile Design with Adobe Illustrator

Learn to create detailed, professionally illustrated patterns for fabric using Adobe Illustrator. Whether you draw detailed designs by hand, want to create a fabric pattern from your photos or draw freehand using Illustrator's tools, this class will teach you how to get your pattern ready for fabric.

Illustrator is a large application and this is your chance to focus on Surface Textile Patterns to be printed on fabric. Techniques most useful for graphic artists & Surface Textile designers will be covered. Find out how to vectorize your pencil or ink drawings, add and control colors for related designs, trace and edit your design and turn it into a usable repeating pattern design for printing on yards of fabric. Learn where and how to print or license your surface textile pattern.

Bring a flash thumb drive and line drawings if desired.

This class will be taught on a Mac, but is adaptable to Windows.

Photoshop for the Hobby Photographer

You can create the best photos ever digitally, whether you use a digital camera, or scan your photos. Photoshop is a huge application and this is your chance to get acquainted with some of the basic Photoshop tools and techniques most useful for hobby photographers. Find out how to repair damaged photographs, correct color, remove unwanted elements, transform your photographs into sepia tones or hand-tinted looks, and more. Much of what will be learned will be useful for Photoshop Elements as well. This class will be taught on a Mac computer, but is adaptable to Windows.

Advanced Photoshop Techniques

Already know the basics? Learn refined selection techniques using masks, channels, and vector tools. Create panoramas with layer masks and use textures and blending modes to make your images pop. Get the best balance of light and dark using High Dynamic Range. Reposition content to perfection with content-aware tools. Adjust exposure and contrast balance with Curves. With these techniques, you will never have to put up with a less than perfect photo again!

Prerequisite: It is recommended that you have solid basic knowledge of Photoshop, or have taken Photoshop for the Hobby Photographer before you take this class.

Essential Wordpress Skills - Fundamentals to Site Launch

Would you like to have a website, but you have no idea where to start? Do you have a business that you want to promote online? Does paying a designer seem like too big of an expense? Are you organizing an event that needs a web page? Then this workshop is for you! A Wordpress website is inexpensive and simpler to design and maintain than you might think.

In the first 3-weeks you will learn how to get a domain name, set-up hosting, and review all the settings you need to know step-by-step  We will start at the very beginning and help you with the basics of how to setup and maintain a Wordpress website, and you’ll be ready to build your website or blog.

In the last 3-weeks you will learn how to plan out your new website and create a design that will be engaging for your users and give you a web presence you can be proud of. We will learn how to develop a site map, wireframes, write content, and prepare images. Once you’re ready, we’ll discuss how to pick a theme, and how to implement your design in Wordpress.

Wordpress Website - Site Design to Launch

Okay, you have mastered the basics of how to setup and maintain a Wordpress website, how to get a domain name, set-up hosting, and all the settings you need to know. And you have an idea, a domain name, hosting…heck you’ve even installed Wordpress! What now?

In this workshop you will learn how to plan out your new website and create a design that will be engaging for your users and give you a web presence you can be proud of. We will learn how to develop a site map, wireframes, write content, and prepare images. We’ll discuss how to pick a theme, and how to implement your design in Wordpress.

This class is designed for people who have a basic concept already established to build a new site. How to acquire domain names, hosting, and setup are covered in the “Essential Wordpress Skill” class listed above.

Essential Computer Skills

Whether you want to update your skills, need to review the basics before progressing to another technology-based class, or are new to computers, this one-day class will give you a solid foundation and clear understanding of essential tools and basic functions. If you’ve ever saved a file but couldn’t find it later, or wanted to cry or curse because your computer was doing something you couldn’t understand, this class will help! If you’ve been using computers for quite some time, but find yourself frustrated when you try to learn new technology tools, this class will help!

First, we’ll present a brief overview of computer components and their functions. Become familiar with the Windows interface for PC’s, and then work on how to manage your files. You will leave with an understanding of the roles of computer hardware and software; operating systems and applications; how to navigate your Windows desktop and control windows; move and copy files; create folders and folder hierarchy; use the recycle bin, and many more essential tools for stress-free success!

Quickbooks Pro for the Small Business Owner

QuickBooks Pro is one of the most widely used accounting programs for small businesses. This class will lead you through the set-up and use of the software for basic accounting functions including writing and printing checks, tracking income and expenses, generating financial statements, accounts payable and receivable, invoicing and more.

The class is taught in a computer lab so that students may gain hands-on experience with the software. Purchase of QuickBooks Pro 2010 is not required, but purchasing "QuickBooks Pro for Dummies" is recommended for those who do not own the software.

Students without bookkeeping experience are recommended to take the Recordkeeping for Small Business class.

Students must bring a USB Memory Disk of at least 1 GB of memory to class. Mac users are welcome to bring their own laptops with QuickBooks already installed.

This advanced class is designed for those who are experienced with QuickBooks and who are looking for insight on how to deal with the more difficult issues that advanced users often face. Some of the topics covered are: inventory, accounting issues and solutions, tracking and managing sales tax, working with and resolving payroll issues, effective use of remote access, job costing, time tracking and much more.

The class is a hands-on course. Students must have previous experience with QuickBooks Pro software.

The Basics of Selling on eBay

Learn strategies for selling on eBay in this class designed to enhance your sales success. Create and enhance listings with photo editing and attractive descriptions. Learn ways to use PayPal in conjunction with ebay and set pricing to maximize profits.

This class will focus on using multiple platforms for successful ebay sales, so students must have existing PayPal, ebay, and email accounts created prior to class, and a Smart phone. Hese will be actively used in class to create ebay listings.

How to Use a Smartphone

If you bought a smartphone for someone, expect to get some calls with questions like, “What’s an app?”, or “Why does my battery run out so quickly?”, or “How do I upload videos to the Facebook?”

Explore the basic functionality of your new smartphone. Learn common tasks like sending a text message, watching a video clip on YouTube, or surfing the Web. This workshop also covers fundamentals like configuring the security options, adjusting the brightness of the display, and setting the device up to work with a wireless network.

Bring your iPhone, Android, Blackberry, or other smartphone to class with your charger.

iPad and Android Tablets for Beginners

Today’s Android and iPad tablets do so much more than browse the web or send an email. Either of these new devices provide you with a computer, Web browser, e-book reader, personal organizer and more - all in your lap! In this entertaining class, you will learn what your Android or iPad tablet really can do and how to use it for more than browsing the Web. Learn how to set up your Android or iPad for email, texting, WiFi networks, and Bluetooth; and discover how to best sync with your computer. Learn how to take terrific pictures and send them to friends, install apps, and figure out what the best apps are best for you to make your tablet even smarter.

Bring your Android or iPad to class along with its leash (charger).

Additional needs:
Please bring (or remember) your Google or Apple user ID and passwords as applicable.
Also, please bring (or remember) your email ISP, username and password as we will be downloading free apps and sharing/sending pictures to our email accounts.
