Continuing education is a requirement for many healthcare professions, including medical assisting.

There are many benefits to receiving continuing education including keeping up-to-date with industry standards, refreshing professional skills, and providing an opportunity for healthcare professionals to continue to learn and grow both personally and professionally. As a general rule, 1-hour of instruction time is equal to one continuing education unit (CEU). For a medical assistant who received their certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the requirement for continued certification is to receive 60 CEU’s over a 5-year period.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to receive up to 12 CEU’s in just two days!

Pam Sanborn, MA, has worked in healthcare for over 25 years and has been teaching medical assisting courses at Cabrillo College since 2003, where she is the Medical Assisting Department Chair. She has been training medical assistants to become health coaches since 2013. Students enjoy Pam’s sense of humor, enthusiasm, and her ability to make learning any subject fun.

Health Coaching Techniques

“Health coaching is a way to interact with patients and engage patients in their own care. The purpose of health coaching is to help patients understand the clinician’s advice, to discuss how the patient feels about that advice, and to work with patients to use that advice to improve their health” (CEPC-UCSF, 2015).

The importance of health coaching cannot be underestimated. A skillful health coach can make a tremendous difference for a patient and can profoundly improve their quality of life and health related outcome. Through their interaction with their health coach, a patient can define their goals clearly and develop a reasonable pathway to achieve those goals. A patient can also identify barriers they face when trying to change a lifelong habit, and can learn to change their behavior in a meaningful way. In essence, the health coach can help the patient take charge of their health.

In this interactive session, participants will take the first steps towards becoming a health coach by learning basic health coaching techniques.

Medical Terminology Refresher: Structure and Function of the Human Body

It is essential for all healthcare workers to have an understanding of the structure and function of the human body and be fluent in medical terminology. Learning medical terminology is like learning a foreign language and, with any language, if you don’t use it, you lose it. In this interactive session, participants will refresh their medical terminology skills and deepen their understanding of the structure and function of the human body. Come join us and have fun while learning!
